The Amherst Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Auxiliary Officer.  Individuals who have an interest in police work and those who wish to serve the community and citizens of Amherst in a volunteer role are encouraged to apply.

 

The purpose of the Amherst Police Auxiliary is to augment the strength of the regular department and to assist in routine duties of any emergency that might arise, under the supervision of the Chief of Police.  Some examples of where the Auxiliary is utilized include the following:

 

  • Power outages
  • Natural disasters
  • Traffic control
  • Special assignments/details
  • Road patrol ride along with sworn officers

 

Auxiliary officers can expect to be called out at a moment’s notice and respond as needed. 

 

Applicants must meet the following membership requirements in order to be accepted as a member of the Amherst Auxiliary Unit:

 

  • At least twenty-one (21) years of age with a maximum of sixty-five (65) years of age at time of appointment
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Good moral character
  • Physically fit
  • Pass a background check
  • Complete Lorain County Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary Academy held in January
  • Upon completion of academy, applicants must complete twenty (20) hours of riding time with a sworn officer and a six (6) month probationary period
